REGULAR, VIGOROUS EXERCISE CAN IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF PARKINSON’S PATIENTS
Research has proved that exercise helps everyone’s health, attitude and well-being. But, for people with Parkinson’s Disease, some studies have also shown that exercise is essential in managing their disease. Regular exercise is not only crucial for maintaining and improving mobility, flexibility, balance, and range of motion, but, according to numerous worldwide studies, in addition to helping with movement, studies currently being conducted are showing exercise can assist in slowing the progression of Parkinson's Disease (PD).
What is Parkinson's Disease? PD is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that occurs when the neurons within the brain that produce the chemical dopamine become impaired or die. Dopamine is the chemical messenger responsible for smooth, purposeful muscle activity. Loss of dopamine causes the nerve cells to fire out of control, leaving patients unable to direct or control their movements in a normal manner. Parkinson's Disease can also cause a patient to have feelings of anxiety, depression and moodiness. Worse, it can bring about cognitive problems as well. Sadly, this disease seems to be on the rise--among the young as well as the elderly!
The good news is that specialized rigorous exercise provides significant relief to patients. This requires a PD-knowledgeable trainer, special equipment and dedicated space. Currently, for the PD community of southern California, there are no free of charge facilities available or equipped to handle such specialized, dedicated PD exercise-for-wellness needs. We want to change that. The PD community has joined forces with a group of dedicated and energetic people who have a great desire to make a difference for their friends, relatives and those in Orange County who have been stricken with PD and can't afford gym fees. They are determined that such an exercise facility becomes a reality here. Though support has been gained from the National Parkinson Foundation Orange County Chapter (NPFOCC) and the American Parkinson Disease Association Orange County (APDAOC), there are no extra funds available. And, in its first year, at least $35,000 is needed to launch this PD wellness exercise program.
So, we seek donations or a sponsor to help us pay for leased space and to purchase equipment just for our Parkinson gym users. This gym is called Parkinson Exercise Program for Wellness (PEP4U) and is a 501(c) (3) non-profit program dedicated to bringing the benefits of specialized exercise on brain change in PD. Exercise IS medicine for people with PD, and our sponsors will be given the recognition they deserve for helping to bring it to PD patients. This worthwhile program has potential to greatly improve quality of life for people with Parkinsons Disease throughout Orange County and beyond while setting an example for the rest of the country to follow.
